The Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, stated:

“Russia’s unacceptable military invasion of Ukraine and the energy crisis it causes, forces us to adjust to some extent the schedule of lignitization, which is our strategic goal in our quest for clean and cheap energy. One of our most important actions, concerning the lignite areas, is the development of economic activities with a low carbon footprint. Sustainability is our answer to a future of social progress and strong economic growth. The actions launched today are a strong link in the chain of the strategic plan we are implementing in Kozani, Florina and Megalopolis for the transition to a better, more productive and sustainable tomorrow that will utilize the principles of the circular economy.”

The Deputy Minister of Development and Investments responsible for TAM issues, Nikos Papathanasis, said:

“We are moving at an intensive pace to change the production model of the country, giving new life to the areas that for years depended on the extraction and use of lignite. With the new financial program of 60.6 million euros, with an implementation horizon of 2023-2025, projects and actions that promote sustainable economic activities with a low carbon footprint in these areas and create new and well-paid jobs will be strengthened. In collaboration with local communities and productive entities, we identify the development strategic possibilities, so that Greece can keep up with the European goals towards a green and climate-neutral economy”.
