What should you do?
February 28 is the deadline for paying road tax without any risk of a fine.
Regarding digital immobilization, vehicle owners who want to voluntarily immobilize their car or bicycle should do so electronically through the myCAR application in the Unified Digital Portal of the Public Administration.
The step-by-step process
- Select or enter the registration number of the vehicle you wish to digitally immobilize. Enter your zip code of the area, the street and the number.
- You are responsible for declaring the parking space, which must be privately owned, rented or assigned.
- Submit your application and if you are the sole owner the system gives you an application number and informs you that the vehicle has been digitally immobilized. If there are co-owners, they will be notified of your request, which they will need to approve to complete the process.
- In the event that the vehicle’s parking space during the “digital immobility”, due to the fact that it was rented, is different, you must obtain a temporary license plate (M) in order to transfer the vehicle to the new space.
- If you fill in the parking details of the vehicle incorrectly in the digital real estate application, you have the possibility to correct the parking address within the same day. Next year you will have to contact the D.O.Y. your.
- Digital immobility is only allowed for Passenger Cars. and Bicycles I.X.
It is noted that in the event that the vehicle is in circulation or is parked in a public place and bears plates, while it is in a digital immobility, the payment of Traffic Fees and their late payment fine, as well as an administrative fine of 10,000 euros, is imposed. In case of recurrence, an administrative fine of 30,000 euros is imposed and the driver’s license of the owner/holder is withdrawn.
The immobility of the vehicle is reported to the competent D.O.Y. in the following cases:
- Theft or misappropriation of the vehicle.
- Circulation of the vehicle abroad.
- Transfer of the vehicle which has not been completed.
- Seizure of the vehicle by a public authority with its registration details.
- Removal of the vehicle registration data by a public authority.
- Delivery to the facilities of the Alternative Vehicle Management of Greece (EDOE) for the purpose of its final deletion by recycling.
- Total destruction of the vehicle due to fire or other cause.
- Auction of the vehicle.
- Alienation of the owner or possessor from the vehicle, as in the case of its collection by the Municipality as abandoned.
Any other case where the owner or owner of the vehicle is not in possession of either the vehicle or its traffic information (license and plates).
How is the M plate issued?
For vehicles that are stationary there is also the possibility of a temporary driving license for a few days only:
- for its delivery, at an end-of-life vehicle collection point (OTKZ), or
- for the repair and control thereof by KTEO or
- to change the space in which it is kept
This is the “M” plate which allows the circulation of a vehicle for three consecutive days or twice within the year for a total period of up to three days.
It is noted that in this case the debtor is required to pay traffic fees amounting to 10 euros/day for a passenger vehicle. or 3 euros/day for an I.X.
Issuance is done through the AADE myCAR platform, activating the option, “Issue M plate: Submit Declaration” and requires:
- The existence of an active insurance policy and
- The existence of a paid – active subscription (at least for one day of circulation) (click here)
In the case of multiple owners in the same vehicle, the “acceptance” of the process is required by all co-owners. In particular, with the submission of an application by a co-owner for the temporary circulation of the vehicle with an “M” plate, the other co-owners are informed via a message in TAXISnet’s “Personal Information” and email, in order to accept this action.
Fees “by the month”
In 2023, vehicle owners will also have the opportunity to immobilize their vehicles by paying monthly traffic fees, however, the right to temporarily immobilize them by paying proportional traffic fees (digital or voluntary in the D.O.Y.) it is granted only once within the year and for a certain period of time.
When the period of movement for which proportional traffic fees have been paid expires, the vehicle must be immobilized immediately, specifically on the last working day of the month or the first working day of the following month, if the last day is a holiday.
In the event that the owner wishes to drive the vehicle for a period of time longer than the one already selected, he will have to pay the remaining amount of the annual traffic fees.
