At a record high of 2.3 trillion. The total debt of Germany amounts to 10,000,000 euros, mainly due to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and the energy crisis.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, federal, state, municipal and municipal debt reached 2,367.3 billion euros at the end of 2022, 2% or 46.1 billion euros higher than in December 2021.

The federal debt increased by 4.6%, to 1,620.4 billion euros.

“This is mainly due to the continued increase in financing requirements from the Economic Stabilization Fund (WSF), as a result of the pandemic of recent years and the current energy crisis,” the statisticians report.

The fund was established in 2020 and expanded in 2022, in order to include the impact of the energy crisis, while the burden is also significant from the newly created fund of 100 billion euros for the modernization of the armed forces.

In 2022, however, the funds of the fund had not yet been used.

However, the federal states, except for Saxony-Anhalt, managed in 2022 to reduce their debts by 5% compared to 2021. Conversely, the obligations of the municipalities increased by 4.4%.
