Azul and Latam cancel more than 500 flights due to Covid-19; check the list of Latam

Azul and Latam airlines reported this Monday (10) that 528 flights were canceled and, in some cases, rescheduled due to absence and crew members.

The advancement of the omicron variant has left teams of pilots and flight attendants on sick leave. As it is a highly specialized workforce, which requires weeks or months of training for those who are already qualified, immediate replacement is not possible.

The airline points out that this is a minimum percentage close to the total daily domestic flights operated by the company, around 625, on average.

In a statement, Latam advises passengers to check the flight status directly on the company’s website before heading to airports.

The SNA (National Union of Aeronauts) informs that it does not have official data on the total number of professionals on sick leave. But it indicates that the percentage of absences is higher at Azul because the company was already operating at the limit of its capacity.

According to data from Anac (National Civil Aviation Agency), between December 2020 and November 2021, Azul’s share reached 33.6% in revenue per passenger per kilometer (RPK), a increase of 6.8 percentage points in relation to the same period of the previous year (26.8%), which led Azul to the leadership of the sector.

Considering the same range, Latam’s share dropped from 34.8% to 33.2% and that of Gol, from 38% to 32.2%.

When questioned, Gol reported that it had not had any flights canceled due to staff absence.

Through its press office, Azul informed that the focus is now “accommodating customers who are being impacted” and that the company works to normalize the situation as soon as possible, taking the necessary measures. THE leaf found that the company is already hiring pilots and flight attendants.
