Panos Routsi returned to the Syntagma on Sunday, October 26, declaring that “we will be here every night” and asking the prime minister and EL.AS “not to bother these children”.
“What our prime minister did was shown by how annoyed he was with this whole act, with the hunger strike that I did for 23 days, and he decided to punish these children, this world, with this amendment that he brought out. This will not pass. Me and all the parents, this whole team that is here every day, I will not leave it like that” Panos Routsi initially stressed and added:
“These children were murdered. They did not become a sacrifice, as the prime minister told us at the beginning. From now on, we who are here will be a sacrifice. We sacrifice for these children, to keep the memory alive. Why don’t we understand why it bothers us so much to have this place over here, to be able to call out our children’s names every day? Why does it bother them? If only they had told us the truth from the beginning, if everything had been done right from the beginning, we wouldn’t be here. That is why I feel the responsibility to be with them, because this all started with me and I will not leave them like this until the end. I will be here with them until the last one goes to jail. (These children) of course, from the first moment. They are my children, they are my family and this is how we will stay, united. And the people who come here, I invite them again, those who were with me for 23 days, to be here every night. We are not afraid. We demand justice, we demand the truth and we will be here every night.”
Panos Routsi and Zoe Konstantopoulou who accompanied him participated in the cleaning action of the place where the monument with the names has been erected, together with the “To the End” group.
Mr. Routsi asked the government not to use violence while addressing the Prime Minister and EL.AS he stressed: “Mr. Prime Minister, I beg you, do not do anything to this world, to these children. And to the police I say the following: just think if your children were over here. What would you do? What would you do and burden the whole world for no reason? Please don’t do it. We are here in peace. We honor our children. These people who come here every night, we don’t do anything. We are not the threat. There are others.”
Panos Routsi and Zoe Konstantopoulou who accompanied him participated in the cleaning action of the place where the monument with the names has been erected, together with the “To the End” group.
Mr. Routsi, speaking earlier at MEGA, was placed on the amendment voted on the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, stressing that the monument is “a symbol of memory and honor for those who were unjustly lost”.
“The children of Tempe belong to this memory and they do not insult it, they honor it,” he said characteristically, adding that “instead of erasing their names, make sure that there are no names again.”
Mr. Routsi expressed his concern that “an attempt will be made to erase the names” and that is why he has decided to be every day in Syntagma Square, at the place where his son’s name has been written in red paint, while he called on the citizens who supported him during his 23-day hunger strike to stand by his side again.
“We owe it to the children we lost, we owe it to ourselves, because what they are doing is an act of revenge and it will not go away,” underlined Mr. Rucci.
The 23-day hunger strike
It is recalled that Panos Routsi, father of 22-year-old Dennis who lost his life in the Tempe train tragedy, had carried out a 23-day hunger strike at the Syntagma, demanding the exhumation of his son’s body, so that toxicological tests could be carried out with independent technical consultants.
The strike ended on 7/10 when his lawyer, Zoe Konstantopoulou, announced that all his demands had been accepted and that the families of the victims would be invited to submit proposals for the appointment of experts and that they would be able to hire their own technical advisers.
Meanwhile, brooms, mops and sponges were taken by the “To the End” team clearing the area around the monument with the names for Tempi.
