Panel SA: São Paulo retail sales reach pre-pandemic level for the first time, says trade association

by

Retail in the capital of São Paulo grew 15% in October compared to the same month in 2020, reaching for the first time the level of sales prior to the pandemic, according to a survey by ACSP (São Paulo Commercial Association).

In comparison with September this year, the increase was 17.4%, pulled by the sales of Children’s Day. The advance compared to October 2019 was 1.1%.

According to the organisation’s economist, Marcel Solimeo, with the sales level recovered, the sector can now return to projecting growth for 2022.

”It would be a very auspicious advance if we consider that the losses were very large and we are still facing difficulties, such as inflation, energy and input problems”, says Solimeo.

The scenario is one of optimism with the arrival of Black Friday. Retailers are expanding promotions, including in pharmacies and supermarkets, which decided to bet on the date. The growth of internet sales should also collaborate, according to the economist.

The Christmas movement, on the other hand, depends on Black Friday itself, as many Brazilians anticipate shopping to take advantage of discounts, and on the existence of some aid for the low-income population until the end of the year. According to Solimeo, this is an important factor, especially for the sale of food and higher value products.

Still, Christmas 2021 should surpass the result of the two previous dates, predicts Solimeo.
