Thessaloniki: The 18th Metro train arrives – The first FlyOver construction sites at the end of 2022

In the course of the major infrastructure projects implemented in Thessaloniki, so that the city is transformed into a “metropolis” of development and a city that will offer a better quality of life to its residents, said the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. George Karagiannis , speaking on the radio Real fm 107.1 and the journalist Maria Samolada.

Mr. Karagiannis, explaining the way in which Thessaloniki is “transformed” into a sustainable and quality city, referred to the ongoing road and railway projects, the Thessaloniki Metro, the flood defenses and the new school units that will begin to manufactured within 2022.

“From the first day we took over at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with Costas Karamanlis we set a goal: The upgrade of infrastructure projects – which the city needed so much – to ensure a better quality of life and economic development.”

“Our interventions, either on the roads, or on the railway projects to and from the port, aim to make Thessaloniki a center of freight transport, which in combination with the new investments will attract a large number of people who had gone abroad. “so that the brain drain becomes a brain gain”, pointed out the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, emphasizing that “we must all work together, without political behaviors”.

“We work with the logic of schedules, we do a project management at the Ministry because we believe that the area of ​​infrastructure has a very large multiplier for the Greek economy”, added Mr. Karagiannis.

In fact, making an “account” for the 2.5 years of the Mitsotakis government, he stressed that about 8 billion projects have already been auctioned, while in the 4.5 years of SYRIZA it was only 850 million!

The connection with the new Pediatrics in Filiro

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, initially referred to the road connection of the new pediatric hospital in Filiros, emphasizing that the tender for the improvement of the existing road has started, noting that in the coming days the project for the improvement of the existing road will be auctioned, with secured funding of 13 million. euro. “We estimate that by the end of the year we will have a contractor, while the construction time of the project is two years,” he said.

In fact, the Ministry of Infrastructure is expanding its intervention and will proceed with the auction of the study for the construction of a new road connection, a project that will be important for the whole city.

The Thermi-Galatista section is delivered earlier

Mr. Karagiannis announced that the works in the Thermi – Galatista section of the Thessaloniki – Polygyros road axis are expected to be completed 7 to 8 months earlier than the schedule. Thus, until the beginning of September, this important project for the connection with Halkidiki, will be available for use by residents and visitors.

The Undersecretary of Infrastructure announced, in fact, that by the three days of the Holy Spirit, when there is usually a large outflow of tourists to Halkidiki, the so-called “orphan kilometer” in Potidea will have been delivered. “We will be done with this gangrene,” he commented characteristically.

FlyOver-In Greece we have not constructed such projects

Then Mr. Karagiannis referred to the state-of-the-art overhead highway, FlyOver, the operation of which is expected to provide a definitive solution to the traffic problem of Thessaloniki.

Speaking about the pioneering project that will take place in Thessaloniki, the Undersecretary said: “We will all be proud, as in Greece we have not yet constructed such a project.”

He reminded that shortly before the end of 2021 the binding offers for this emblematic project were submitted and estimated that “by the end of January there will be a temporary contractor so that by the end of the year the first construction sites have been set up”.

The data will change the road and rail connection of the 6th pier

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure made a special reference to the road connection of the 6th pier of the port of Thessaloniki as well as to the auction of its railway connection.

As he explained: “We have a very ambitious goal in the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport with Costas Karamanlis. When we took over, we said that we would turn Thessaloniki into a metropolis of infrastructure. One of the first plans we examined was the port and we are progressing very well “. He added that the main goal is for Thessaloniki to become “a sustainable city, not just a city of the weekend”.

Thus, the road connection of the 6th pier is already under construction, which was problematic for years, while the port will be strengthened with a railway connection that until today was almost non-existent.

“We have already announced the big tender for the package of railway projects and a large part of it concerns Thessaloniki. The railway connection of the 6th pier and the suburban train of Western Thessaloniki will change the data for the whole city “, he stressed.

According to Mr. Karagiannis, the main goal is to make Thessaloniki a center of freight transport and this goal is served by the construction of the new railway axis Thessaloniki – Archers and the works on the axis to Eidomeni, as well as the upgrade of the Promachonas line.

Thessaloniki Metro: “In February we will receive the 18th and last train”

Regarding the Thessaloniki Metro, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure assured that: “the projects are progressing very well” and added that: “We will move forward. The project continues according to our plan, we remain faithful to our schedules and at the end of 2023 we will deliver to the citizens a functional metro “.

In this context, in the coming days, the 18th and last train will be received, in order to complete this leg, while in the last six months, test routes are being operated. In addition, a tender was announced for 15 new trains related to the Thessaloniki Metro network, ie both to the Main Metro Line, as well as to the extension to Kalamaria.

In addition, in the coming days, the PPP tender for the Private Operator of the Thessaloniki Metro will start, something that happens for the first time in the Greek data.

Flood protection works make the life of the inhabitants better

An important place in the big “fans” of the projects implemented in Thessaloniki are the flood projects, which according to Mr. Karagiannis “are essential infrastructure projects that will make the lives of residents better.”

Thus, the flood protection works in Lachanagora have already been auctioned and by the end of the year the works will start, while the corresponding works in Kalamaria have also been auctioned.

The exceptional flood protection project in Oreokastro is being auctioned immediately, which, in fact, concerns several areas and will upgrade the life of the inhabitants in western Thessaloniki as a whole.

By the end of the year, construction for Courthouses and schools will begin

Closing, Mr. Karagiannis made special mention of the building projects that are being implemented in Thessaloniki. As he announced, in the first quarter of 2022, the tender for the cluster of the Courthouses of Central Macedonia will pass to the Second Phase, while by the end of the year the works will have started.

Regarding the construction of 17 state-of-the-art, bioclimatic school units in Central Macedonia, he said: “Most school complexes are located in Western Thessaloniki. In a few days, the 2nd Phase of the competition begins, while by the end of the year, their construction is expected to begin “.
