The Director General of the International Monetary Fund, h Kristalina Georgievawill be in China from tomorrow Wednesday to Sunday for talks with top officials of the government of the Asian country, announced a representative of the IMF.

He will then travel to Indonesia (September 4-September 7) and India (September 8-September 10), respectively, for the ASEAN and G20 summits, according to the same source.

Last month, the Washington-based financial institution slightly revised upward its estimates for global growth in 2023, citing the resilience of activity in the first quarter, but warned that challenges clouded the medium-term outlook.

The IMF now expects global growth of 3% in 2023, up slightly (by 0.2%) from its forecast in April. However, it keeps its forecast for 2024 unchanged, also at 3%.

The agency left unchanged its growth forecast for China, the world’s second-largest economy (5.2% this year), after 3% in 2022 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

However, it expects its growth to slow to 4.5% in 2024 and warns that its performance is below expectations, while the risk of a deeper contraction remains due to problems in the real estate sector.
