Panel SA: CIEE launches forum to defend more vacancies for young apprentices and internships

by

At a time when Labor Minister Onyx Lorenzoni tries to allay fears that the Bolsonaro government plans to weaken the young apprentice program, Ciee (Centro de Integração Empresa – Escola) launches this week a forum to defend the expansion of opportunities offered to students aged 14 to 24.

At the end of last year, the ministry opened a working group to, according to the agency, “improve the apprenticeship program”, but the movement to change the rules generated discomfort among unions and groups that support the current model of the young apprentice.

The fear then grew that the government would try to make the quotas for apprentices in companies more flexible or would allow participation for out-of-school youth, weakening the role of the program as a stimulus for education.

In messages on social media last week, Lorenzoni said that “no one is going to end up with the smallest apprentice, as they are maliciously spreading around”.

According to Ciee, the forum will have partnerships such as Lepes-USP (Laboratory of Studies and Research in Social Economy) and APE (Academia Paulista de Educação). The goal is to talk about the number of internship and apprenticeship vacancies offered in the market, which is currently considered low in view of the number of young people in this age group.

A document was also prepared that points out the low quality of teaching and the current difficulties in incorporating students into the world of work, including the need to update school curricula in the context of innovations.

“We are going to launch the forum to defend and strengthen the thesis that there is no education without work. The objective is to open up more vacancies. Today, some 500,000 young people are served in Brazil, but there is a demand for 17 million young people to study and work” , says Humberto Casagrande, president of Ciee.
