Basic basket in São Paulo is close to R$700

A monthly survey by Dieese (Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies) shows that the value of the basic food basket continues to rise in most of the country. In October, 16 of the 17 capitals had an increase.

The most expensive food basket was registered in Florianópolis, for R$700.69. São Paulo comes right after, with the basket rising from R$ 673.45, in September, to R$ 693.79, in October.

The National Survey of the Basic Food Basket by Dieese takes into account the decree that determined that the food basket was composed of 13 food products in sufficient quantities to guarantee, for a month, the livelihood and well-being of an old-age worker. adult.

When comparing October 2020 and October 2021, the price of a set of basic foods rose in all capitals that are part of the survey. The highest percentages were observed in Brasília (31.65%), Campo Grande (25.62%), Curitiba (22.79%) and Vitória (21.37%). Prime beef had its price reduced in nine capitals, such as Vitória. The main reason was the drop in exports, caused by the Chinese sanction on Brazilian meat.

Based on the most expensive basket in October, that of Florianópolis, Dieese estimates that the minimum wage needed should be equivalent to BRL 5,886.50, which corresponds to 5.35 times the current national floor (BRL 1,100).

The department’s calculation was made taking into account a family of four, with two adults and two children. In September, the minimum amount needed should have been R$5,657.66, or 5.14 times the current floor.

The average time needed to purchase the products in the basket, in October, was 118 hours and 45 minutes (average among the 17 capitals), greater than in September, when it was 115 hours and two minutes.

When comparing the cost of the basket with the net minimum wage, that is, after the discount referring to Social Security (7.5%), the survey verifies that the worker paid by the national floor committed, in October, 58.35% ( average among the 17 capitals) of the net minimum wage to buy basic foodstuffs for an adult. In September, the percentage was 56.53%.

Main product variations

Potato

• Surveyed in the capitals of the Center-South, it increased in 10 cities and rates ranged from 15.51% in Brasília to 33.78% in Florianópolis
• The rain caused difficulties in harvesting and reduced the supply, which raised the level of retail prices

Café

• The price per kilogram of powdered coffee rose in 16 capitals, with highlights for the variations in Vitória (10.14%), Rio de Janeiro (10.06%), Campo Grande (9.81%) and Curitiba (9, 78%)
• The frost at the end of July and the prolonged drought compromised the supply of the grain, which led to an increase in the retail price
• There was also the influence of low global coffee supply and high foreign prices

Tomato

• A kilo of tomatoes registered a price increase in 16 capitals
• The highest increases were observed in Vitória (55.54%), João Pessoa (44.83%), Natal (42.16%), Brasília (40.16%) and Campo Grande (32.69%)

Sugar

• The value of sugar increased in 15 capitals and the increases fluctuated between 0.27%, in João Pessoa, and 7.02%, in Rio de Janeiro

• Lower supply and high export volume explained the price increases

Soy oil

• Recorded high in 13 of the 17 capitals, between September and October
• The biggest increases occurred in Vitória (3.22%), Brasília (2.40%), Campo Grande (2.16%), Rio de Janeiro (1.81%) and São Paulo (1.76%)
• The most important downturns were those of Natal (-0.90%) and Aracaju (-0.49%)
• The growing volume exported and the appreciation of the price of oil, which increased the demand for biodiesel (whose input is soy oil), reduced the supply and contributed to the increase in prices

Milk

• Milk and butter increased in price in 11 capitals
• The most significant increases in butter occurred in Vitória (5.18%) and Salvador (2.72%). For milk, the biggest increases were registered in Campo Grande (2.98%) and Belém (1.78%)
• The high production costs continued to pressure the value of milk in the field, even with greater supply

Bean

• The price of beans dropped in 11 capitals
• The carioquinha type, surveyed in the North, Northeast, Midwest, in Belo Horizonte and São Paulo, registered a fall in nine capitals, from -2.73% in Fortaleza to -0.13% in São Paulo
• The hikes occurred in Belém (1.46%), Campo Grande (0.83%) and Salvador (0.54%)
• The cost of black beans, surveyed in the capitals of the South, in Vitória and Rio de Janeiro, decreased in Porto Alegre (-1.33%) and Curitiba (-1.00%) and increased in Vitória (1.14% ), Rio de Janeiro (0.73%) and Florianópolis (0.36%)
• Despite the off-season period, the drop in demand, due to high price levels, influenced the reduction in retail values

Meat
