Ukraine and Turkey will sign 12 agreements, including a free trade agreement, when President Tayyip Erdogan visits Kiev, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Smegal said today.
Tomorrow, Thursday, Erdogan is scheduled to visit Kiev in a show of solidarity with Ukraine in its confrontation with Russia, which has amassed more than 100,000 troops near its border.
While promoting defense and energy cooperation with Russia, Turkey has also sold drones to Ukraine, angering Moscow. Erdogan has offered to mediate between Moscow and Kiev, but has also warned Russia not to invade Ukraine.
“We have intensified negotiations with our Turkish partners to ensure that the (free trade) agreement is in the interests of Ukrainian companies, creates opportunities for our exports and opportunities for modernizing Ukrainian companies,” Smigal told a government meeting.
Trade between Turkey and Ukraine, both bordered by the Black Sea, totaled $ 7 billion in 2021, with Ukrainian exports reaching $ 4.1 billion. Cereals and minerals accounted for 70% of Ukrainian sales in Turkey.
Negotiations for a free trade agreement have been delayed for almost a decade due to disputes over grains and metals.
Other agreements to be signed tomorrow, Thursday, include high-tech, aviation and space co-operation on youth issues and law enforcement, Smegal said.
