Sakellaropoulou on Alki’s murder: “We all have to think and act today”

by

Posted in facebookthe President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou refers to unthinkable event on the streets of the co-capitalwhich led to murder of a young man just nineteen years old and underlines that “it brings back, in the most tragic way, the worrying questions of a, unfortunately, timeless phenomenon: how did we allow the field of football and sports in general to become a field of manifestation of the most extreme hatred, the most brutal, primitive instincts”? .

At the same time, the President raises another question: “How do we tolerate our streets, parks, squares becoming a scene of violence between rival gangs, endangering the safety of citizens?” And, most important of all: through what processes did violence become the only way to express a portion of young people with social integration problems, feelings of marginalization, perceptions of extreme negativity, fears for a canceled future?

Finally, he emphasizes that “we must all think and act today, without delay. “Let not the bestiality that unfolded in Thessaloniki, which cost the life of a young man and the injury of two others, become another episode in the ongoing transformation of social life into an arena of rivalry, intolerance, hostility, and, ultimately, murderous inhumanity.”

In particular, in her post, Ms. Sakellaropoulou mentions:

“Whatever one feels about the murder of a young man of just nineteen years old in Thessaloniki because his team did not like his slaughterers, disgust, sadness, anger, no matter how much the crime will be denounced and the punishment of the guilty will be required , the trauma caused to society by such an act will remain open as long as the fan rage and hooliganism and, above all, as far as barbarism and violence on and off the field are cultivated as a sign of manhood. The unthinkable event on the streets of the co-capital brings back, in the most tragic way, the worrying questions of a, unfortunately, timeless phenomenon: how did we allow the field of football and sports in general to become a field of manifestation of the most extreme hatred, the most primitive instincts? How do we tolerate our streets, parks, squares becoming a scene of violence between rival gangs, endangering the safety of citizens? And, most important of all: through what processes did violence become the only way to express a portion of young people with social integration problems, feelings of marginalization, perceptions of extreme negativity, fears of a canceled future? We must all think and act today, without delay. “Let not the bestiality that unfolded in Thessaloniki, which cost the life of a young man and the injury of two others, become another episode in the ongoing transformation of social life into an arena of rivalry, intolerance, hostility, and, ultimately, murderous inhumanity.”
