Panel SA: Money is still a favorite in payment for those who use Pix, says survey

by

Cash is still the main form of payment used to pay for purchases, even among people who use Pix. The conclusion is from a survey by the Locomotiva Institute, which will be released this Friday (4).

Almost 45% use cash, while 35% use debit cards and 11% use Pix, according to a telephone survey of 1,500 Brazilians in 72 cities.

Renato Meirelles, president of Instituto Locomotiva, says that Pix is more present in the daily lives of Brazilians but has not yet been able to end the sovereignty that cash has in the population’s preference.

He says that on low incomes and for the self-employed, Pix is more used to receive money.

“It’s that guy who is selling ice cream or the maid who receives at Pix. This made life a lot easier for the bosses, who pays these people. But when it comes to using it, he prefers to use cash”, says Meirelles.

The preference happens because the payment in cash favors obtaining a discount.

“When he pays for a purchase with cash instead of paying with a card, he often gets at least a 5% discount. What financial application gives more than that? It’s not strange to say that paying in cash is a financial application available to the largest portion of the low-income population”, he says.

Meirelles says that a large part of the population still fears that the transfer by Pix will not reach the recipient.

“These fears related to the use of Pix still feed. What will increase not only the use of Pix, but the use of it to withdraw money, is the new method of Pix withdrawal, which allows the affiliated retailer to function as a cashier electronic, in which the consumer transfers money through Pix to the establishment and withdraws in cash”, says the president of Locomotiva.
