In October 2023, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the euro area was 6.5%, stable compared to September 2023 and down from 6.6% in October 2022, according to Eurostat data released today .

Eurostat estimates that 13.2 million people in the EU, of which 11.1 million in the euro area, were unemployed in October 2023.

Compared to September 2023, unemployment increased by 71 thousand in the EU and by 48 thousand in the euro area. Compared to October 2022, unemployment increased by 27 thousand in the EU and decreased by 28 thousand in the euro area.

For Greece, the latest figures available from Eurostat are from September, with the unemployment rate falling to 10%, from 10.6% in August and from 12.1% in October 2022. The unemployment rate for men in September was 8%, while for women it was 12.4%.

Greece has the highest unemployment rate in the EUafter Spain (12% in October).

In terms of young people (under 25), in October 2023, 2.9 million young people were unemployed in the EU, of which 2.4 million were in the euro area. The youth unemployment rate was 14.8% in the EU, up from 14.7% in September 2023, and 14.9% in the euro area, up from 14.6% the previous month.

The highest youth unemployment rates in the EU are recorded in Spain (28%), Italy (24.7%) and Sweden (22.1%).

Greece recorded a youth unemployment rate of 19.4% in September.
