With the increase in the value of IPVA this year, the share of taxpayers in São Paulo who opted for cash payment in January to obtain the discount grew.
About 4.8 million car owners, representing 28% of the total, paid in cash with a 9% rebate, according to the São Paulo Treasury. Last year, when the discount was 3%, approximately 4.4 million car owners advanced payment.
The discount rose from 3% to 9% because 2021 was an atypical year. As the price of used cars soared in the period due to the fall in the production of new ones, it boosted the tax calculation. According to the Treasury, the average increase in the amount of the tax to be paid is 22.5%.
In January, the collection with the IPVA was R$ 7 billion, according to data from the agency. About R$ 2.8 billion goes to municipalities, R$ 1.38 billion to Fundeb and the rest to cash. The result is 7% higher than the one collected in January of last year.
For payment in installments, the first stage expires this Thursday (10th) for owners of cars and motorcycles with final license plate number 1, in the state of São Paulo.
The payment schedule for this first phase runs until February 23, according to the final plate number.
During this period, it is also possible to pay the tax in a single installment, with a 5% discount.
