One step closer to its implementation is its electrical interconnection project Cyprus with Greece, since according to the statements of the president of the implementing body of the ADMIE project, an order has already been given to a specific company for the construction of the cable that will electrically connect Cyprus with Crete.

It is essentially about the start of the project implementation work Great Sea Interconnector, which is expected to be completed within 2026. The project has received a grant from the European Union’s Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and the Environment, which amounts to €657 million

With an eye on Israel

It is recalled that despite the fact that in its first phase the project concerns only the Cyprus-Greece electrical interconnection, in its extension the Great Sea Interconnector it also provides for Israel’s interconnection with the two countries. After all, the matter was thoroughly discussed at the tripartite meeting between Cyprus-Greece and Israel in Nicosia last September without, however, reaching a conclusion.

However, according to new information, Israeli interest has been rekindled in recent months due to the participation of the Greek state in the project through the ADMIE. However, Tel Aviv is not expected to announce decisions, if there is no de-escalation of the situation in the Middle East.

Awaiting Turkish reaction

The start of work on the Great Sea Interconnector it is not expected to happen without a Turkish reaction, given the planning for laying a cable in the west of Cyprus. Just yesterday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry denounced the approval of the Maritime Spatial Plan by the Cypriot government, arguing that it violates the rights of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots.
