Tesla is recalling 26,681 vehicles in the United States because a software error could result in problems with the windshield de-icing process, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday. (9).
Tesla told US regulators that the error could cause a valve on the heat pump to unintentionally open and trap refrigerant material inside the evaporator. Tesla will perform an over-the-air software update to resolve the issue.
The recall covers some 2021-2022 Model 3, Model S, 2021-2022 Model X and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles that may not comply with the federal motor vehicle safety standard.
Tesla said it was not aware of any injuries or accidents related to its latest recall, but NHTSA said the issue could reduce the visibility of the windshield under certain conditions, which could increase the risk of a collision.
The company said it became aware of the issue from customer complaints in December about the loss of heating performance in extreme weather conditions.
Tesla on January 15th released a software update to address the issue as a precautionary measure. After discussions with NHTSA and Transport Canada, tests were carried out to assess the compliance of new vehicles delivered with the software command.
This is the third recall in less than 30 days by Tesla, which is under scrutiny by regulators and some US lawmakers. The cars had problems stopping traffic lights and warning seat belts.
