Embraer and FAB reach an agreement on the purchase of a military freighter

by

Embraer stated this Wednesday (9) that it has reached an agreement with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) regarding the contractual discussion of the order for the KC-390 military freighter.

The agreement ends an unprecedented crisis that arose after the FAB decided, in November, that it would unilaterally cut the number of units acquired from 28 to 15. Embraer even said that it would study “legal measures” about the case.

The agreement signed provides for a reduction in the total number of aircraft to be acquired by the FAB to 22 units, with deliveries until 2034.

The aircraft is Embraer’s biggest defense bet, and a robust initial government purchase is needed to leverage its exposure in the foreign market — the KC-390 has already been purchased by Portugal and Hungary, members of NATO (Western military club), and is offered to other countries.

The aircraft is capable of performing a variety of missions, including humanitarian support, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, transport and launch capability for cargo and troops, as well as in-flight refueling.

The freighter has been used in FAB humanitarian missions both in Brazil, in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, and abroad, in support of disasters in Lebanon and Haiti.
