Panel SA: Electronics sector takes proposal to Guedes to exclude Zona Franca in IPI cut

by

The meeting of the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, on Friday (11) with the Coalizão Indústria, a group of representatives from more than ten business sectors, was conclusive, in the opinion of Jorge Nascimento, president of Eletros, which brings together manufacturers of electronics concentrated in in the Manaus Free Trade Zone.

Nascimento says that Guedes reinforced his intention to reduce the IPI (Imposto sobre Produtos Industrializados), which is an old request from a large part of the industry, but has reservations from Eletros, because the sector says that the cut in the tax can compromise the comparative advantages of Free Zone.

“According to him, the IPI reduction is ready, but it depends on what will happen with the PECs. It can only reduce the IPI if the Fuel PEC does not advance”, reports the president of Eletros, who participated in the meeting with Guedes.

Nascimento says that he took to the minister a proposal to exclude products manufactured in the Manaus Free Trade Zone from the IPI cut, a suggestion that, according to him, was well received by Guedes.

“With this, you maintain this comparative advantage, preserving the current situation. There is no gain or loss for anyone. The industries in the Manaus Free Trade Zone remain competitive with regard to imports. idea of implementing an IPI tax reduction policy”, says Nascimento.
