Staikouras to SKAI: The government is planning an “Easter gift” for the vulnerable, if the budget allows it

by

The government is planning a one-time allowance for the financially weak before Easter in connection with the evolution of inflation and budget revenues, as Finance Minister Christos Staikouras told SKAI.

“Inflation affects the disposable income of the citizen and affects the family budgets. “Whatever we do, we can not fully cover the problems that households have and will have in the near future,” he said, adding that “the budget will decide whether to help vulnerable households with an Easter gift.”

The minister also noted that Greece has inflation at 3%, which is one of the lowest in Europe.

“We believe that the problem is temporary, but it lasts longer than the initial estimates and is more intense,” he said, noting that the estimate for de-escalation in the second quarter of 2022 is still valid.

He also said that if the problem continues in the second half of 2022 it will be milder.

Regarding the further measures of support and relief of households, the Minister stressed that ENFIA has been significantly reduced and by 2023 the solidarity contribution will have been abolished for all.

For businesses, on the other hand, the window for a new haircut on the repayable deposit has closed.

“We need to set aside some resources for adverse scenarios,” he said.

Finally, he reported that February revenues were quite high.
