Extraordinary meeting on wholesale electricity prices on Tuesday in Maximos
The possibility of re-taxing the surplus profits of electricity producers is back on the table, as is the possibility of subsidizing household electricity bills. This is because recently there have been strong fluctuations in the electricity market, with a typical example of intraday deviations, of the order of 450 – 500 euros, from the lowest to the highest price. Thus, the government and the Ministry of Environment and Energy are said to estimate that the price discrepancies in the last 24 hours create conditions suitable for excessive profits in the electricity production companies.
In this context tomorrow at 10 am. the prime minister convenes an emergency meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, regarding the discrepancies in his wholesale prices current.
Prices are skyrocketing
At the same time, the wholesale prices in electricity register clear upward trends at an international level, especially in many European countries.
In the Balkan region in particular, prices seem to have skyrocketed, with characteristic examples on Hungarywhere the prices amount to 200 euros and the Albania which reached 272 euros.
The two main characteristics shaping the situation in wholesale electricity prices are the very high prices of the last 24 hours, which are around 191 euros per megawatt hour, and the strong fluctuations during the day.
Regarding the uptrend in wholesale prices over the past 10 days, a major cause is reduced transmission capacity on a number of electricity interconnections in central and southern Europe.
For the sharp ups and downs, due to the photovoltaics, the wholesale prices are kept at moderate levels during the hours of sunshine, noting a dip at noon. The highest values are recorded immediately after sunset.
