Fox News, the leader in audience ratings in the United States, is trying to enter Brazil. Fox Corporation, which retained control of the news channel after Disney purchased most of Fox’s assets in 2019, is looking for alternatives to establish itself here.

The main one, according to several sources heard by F5is to find a trustworthy person who understands the advertising and television market in Brazil. Conversations with company executives and even politicians have taken place in the last two months.

The project is embryonic, but the company has already identified a public demand that could be met by the editorial line that the American channel adopts at its headquarters: more conservative opinions and more aligned to the right.

What Fox is trying to understand is whether there is commercial viability to avoid losses. The channel knows that there is a wide variety of news channels on Brazilian pay TV and that this could hinder future business. Today, GloboNews, Jovem Pan, CNN Brasil, Record News and Band News are on the air. By the end of the year, CNBC will also debut in the country.

If all stages of the project are completed, the goal is to launch the Brazilian version of Fox News in Brazil by 2026, the year of the next presidential election here. Fox News has already been praised by former president Jair Bolsonaro, who gave an interview to the channel in 2022.

Fox Corporation was approached by the F5 since last Thursday (25) by email, but there was no official response.

WHAT IS FOX NEWS?

Founded in 1996 in the United States, Fox News was created by media mogul Rupert Murdoch to attract a conservative audience. In 2023, Murdoch retired and left the command to his eldest son, Lachlan Murdoch.

Fox News grew at the turn of the millennium. Since then, it has become the leading network in terms of viewership among news channels, surpassing its direct competitors CNN and MSNBC. Moving to another market would be a way to increase its global relevance.

In 2023, Fox News had an average daily audience of 1.2 million people in the United States, according to the Nielsen Institute. This is a 19% drop compared to 2022, even though the leadership was maintained.

MSNBC had 780,000 viewers, a slight increase of 6.4% over the previous year. In the case of CNN, the daily average of people watching the channel was 479,000 (a drop of 15.7%), which puts the network in a distant third place in the American market.

During Donald Trump’s administration, Fox News supported the then-president’s measures and criticized the Democratic Party of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, having been accused of bias in its coverage.
