He clarified at the same time that the largest part of the country does not face a problem of water availability.

It does exist though series of problems, such as the old network and pumping costs, mainly in islands of the Aegean, her Eastern Crete, Rev. Peloponnese and her Attica due to the large concentration of population that requires large amounts of water.

“Except for Attica and Thessaloniki, which have EYDAP and EYATH, the rest of Greece has 300 different providers,” noted the minister, explaining that by the end of the month, when it is expected to be activated Water Regulatory Authority all they will be scrutinized for the way they charge for water.

According to the minister, the cost will be fully recovered, as foreseen by the European directive. “Companies should not get “inside” and for this reason they will be supported by the state with 250 million euros,” he stressed, adding that this intervention aims to reduce, not increase, water.

In addition, he noted that RYA will check providers if they have proceeded with all the required actions for the network.

Mr. Skylakakis also said that the water supply companies are being consolidated and EYDAP of the islands is being created, without this meaning that there is an issue of layoffs.
