Rio de Janeiro businessman Sergio Carvalho, one of the founders of the company Ancar Ivanhoe, died this Wednesday morning (10), aged 83, in Rio de Janeiro, as a result of complications at Covid-19.

A company in the shopping mall segment, Ancar Ivanhoe manages Shopping Eldorado, in São Paulo, and is the representative of Riosul, in Rio de Janeiro, among other investments, in a portfolio of 24 projects in 13 Brazilian cities.

“Ancar Ivanhoe loses a great leader who served as an example and inspiration for its values, such as respect, humility, generosity and transparency,” said the company, in a statement.

Carvalho, who is 83 years old, leaves his wife, Lia, three children (Mariana, Marcos and Marcelo) and grandchildren. He started in business at the family company, Banco Andrade Arnaud.

In the 1970s, the family became a shareholder in Shopping Conjunto Nacional, in Brasília. The project, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021, was the second shopping center to be opened in Brazil.

In 1972, brothers Sergio and Raul Luiz founded Ancar Empreendimentos Comerciais. The group invested in different Brazilian cities, through Shopping Recife, Iguatemi Porto Alegre and Shopping Nova América, in Rio.

Carvalho left the direction of the business in 2003, passing the command to his sons, Marcos and Marcelo. In 2006, the company entered into a partnership with Canadian Ivanhoe Cambridge and became one of the largest shopping mall companies in the country.

“Sergio has always defended that a shopping center has the power to transform the community it is part of, so he propagated the idea that each shopping center was a platform for social development and that it should contribute to the communities in which it was inserted”, said the company .
