Eurozone unemployment stood at 6.4% in August 2024, according to Eurostat.

In particular, in August 2024, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the euro area was 6.4%, stable compared to July 2024, while it appears reduced from 6.6% in August 2023.

The EU unemployment rate was 5.9% in August 2024, up from 6.0% in July 2024 as well as in August 2023. These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Eurostat estimates that 13.027 million people in the EU, of which 10.925 million in the euro area, were unemployed in August 2024.

Compared to July 2024, unemployment decreased by 108 thousand in the EU and by 94 thousand in the euro area, while compared to August 2023, unemployment decreased by 142 thousand in the EU and by 233 thousand in the euro area.

Youth unemployment

In August 2024, 2.766 million young people (under 25) were unemployed in the EU, of which 2.231 million were in the euro area.

In August 2024, the youth unemployment rate was 14.3% in the EU, up from 14.5% in July 2024, and 14.1% in the euro area, up from 14.2% the previous month.

Compared to July 2024, youth unemployment fell by 50,000 in the EU and by 31,000 in the euro area.

Compared to August 2023, youth unemployment fell by 102 thousand in the EU and by 128 thousand in the euro area.

Unemployment by gender

In August 2024, the unemployment rate for women was 6.1% in the EU, stable compared to the previous month, and the unemployment rate for men was 5.7%, up from 5.8% in July 2024.

In the euro area, the unemployment rate for women was 6.6%, flat from the previous month, and the unemployment rate for men was 6.1%, up from 6.2% in July 2024.

Unemployment in Greece

At 9.5% was the unemployment rate in Greece in August 2024, reduced compared to August 2023, when the rate was close to 11.4%, according to Eurostat. The unemployed are a total of 444 thousand, compared to 535 thousand last year in August.

The percentage of young unemployed in Greece reaches 19.4% in August 2024, reduced compared to last year when the corresponding percentage was 28.3%. The young unemployed in Greece are 50 thousand while last year they were 72 thousand.

The percentage of women unemployed stands at 11.6% in August 2024, compared to 15.1% in August 2023.

The male unemployment rate is 7.7% in August 2024, compared to 8.6% in August 2023.
