Closing the meeting, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, presented the benefits arising from the new contract and emphasized that “it is the first time in Greece that we have a change of concessionaire on an operating highway”, referring to an extremely difficult, complicated and unprecedented undertaking.
He underlined that the Greek State collects today Friday 3.27 billion euros, the highest amount ever collected from the utilization of TAIPED assets, while the cumulative benefit reaches 7 billion euros over a 25-year horizon.
From Sunday, October 6, the price of the toll is reduced from 2.8 euros to 2.5 euros, while for the first time a permanent exemption from the payment of tolls is imposed for private passenger vehicles owned by disabled people and war disabled.
Mr. Staikouras pointed out that the employment of workers on the highway is guaranteed, while investments amounting to 380 million euros are planned for the upgrade and modernization of the Attica Highway.
Finally, he stated that with the new Convention, the further improvement of road safety is also sought, as the cooperation between the public and private sector in the concessions has to show tangible and measurable results in the reduction of accidents.
