Gasoline prices rise again at Brazilian gas stations, says ANP

by

After five consecutive weeks of decline, following the reduction in the price of anhydrous ethanol, the price of gasoline rose again at Brazilian stations, according to the ANP (National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels) price survey.

The product was sold last week at an average price of R$ 6,577 per liter, up 0.26% compared to the value verified the previous week. The movement also follows a reversal in the price of anhydrous ethanol.

The average sale price of biofuel by plants in São Paulo, which represents 27% of gasoline sold at stations, rose 0.59% last week, according to the Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics) of Esalq/USP.

Representatives of gas stations say, however, that they are already receiving more expensive imported gasoline from distributors who buy part of their volumes abroad, given the escalation of international oil prices.

Petrobras, the main supplier to the Brazilian market, however, has not yet decided whether to pass on international price variations after the start of the war in Ukraine to its customers. In the government, the wish is for the company to hold on to transfers for a longer period of time.

The latest adjustments by Petrobras were made on January 12, when Brent oil, an international benchmark traded in London, closed trading at US$ 84.67 per barrel. On Monday, the price reached US$ 123.21, close to the 2008 record.

The largest private refinery in the country, the Mataripe Refinery, in Bahia, decided to readjust its prices as of last Saturday (5), promoting increases of up to 19% in the price of gasoline and up to 25% in the price of diesel.

With the high, there are already stations in Bahia with gasoline prices close to R$ 8 per litre.

The price of hydrous ethanol also rose at the plants, according to Cepea, but remained on the decline at the gas stations: according to the ANP, the product was sold last week, on average, at R$4.615, down 0.3% in compared to the previous week.

According to the ANP survey, the average price of diesel at Brazilian gas stations was stable last week, at R$5.603 per litre. The price of cooking gas also did not change, remaining at R$ 102.64 per 13-kilogram cylinder.
