The park will be freely accessible to the public – The investment will transform the seafront into a green, inclusive and vibrant space
The European Commission initially approved funds of 93 million euros from the Cohesion Fund for the redevelopment of a coastal area of 5,400 acres in Faliriko Ormos, Attica. The investment will transform the waterfront into a green, inclusive and vibrant space in line with the principles of the New European Bauhaus, while it is expected to increase tourism, boost local business revenue and boost the area’s economic development. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
The park will be accessible to the public free of charge. The funding will make the coastal front more attractive and transform the area into a hub for a variety of activities. Swimming pools, themed playgrounds, event spaces and a sports center will be built, the Olympic facilities located in Falirikos Ormos will be used and highlighted, where educational and creative activities will be hosted.
The park and the activities it will host will be fully accessible to people with disabilities, while, through the modernization of the road network, trams and paths, it will be connected to the neighboring areas. The funds will also support the flood protection of the coastal zone through the construction of drainage networks and rainwater collectors. More than 2,900 trees will be planted, while renewable energy sources will be integrated into the park’s energy mix.
The European Union will support the general improvement of the quality of life of Athenians, who will be able to enjoy cultural and educational activities and the new facilities of the park.
The Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Mrs. Eliza Ferreira, said in this regard: “The Falirikos Ormos will be a new landmark and tourist attraction of Athens. The green space will connect people of all ages and residents will have access to sporting, educational and creative activities. The New European Bauhaus-inspired project will be an excellent example of how urban regeneration can be designed in a sustainable, stylish and inclusive way.”
