Staikouras in SKAI: “Window” for interventions in fuel prices

by

Interventions in fuel prices were announced by the Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras, speaking on SKAI and the show “War in Ukraine” with Nikos Stravelakis.

“We are aware of the reality, we have an idea of how much households are burdened and we are trying to find and exhaust the fiscal space and there will probably be other measures, other interventions,” he said when asked if the government is considering fuel measures.

At the same time, Mr. Staikouras announced an increase in subsidies on electricity and gas bills so that households and businesses can cope with the rise in prices. “From the moment we operate with percentages, the support will be even greater,” he underlined.

Asked about the new support package announced by the Prime Minister during the recent meeting of the Council of Ministers, Christos Staikouras stressed that the exercise for the interventions that the government wants to make has been completed.

However, he clarified that “it needs a lot of attention, because the country has a high debt, a high deficit, is still in a state of enhanced supervision and does not have an investment grade.”

In addition, the finance minister expressed the government’s intention to extend the reduced VAT on catering and transport to the second half, a measure estimated at 250m euros.

He added that a challenge for the budget is the permanence of the abolition of the solidarity contribution for all citizens and the permanence of the reduction of insurance contributions in 2023, amounting to a total of 2.1 billion euros.

Finally, regarding the minimum wage, Mr. Staikouras stressed that “it should increase bravely and realistically, taking into account the current situation and unemployment.”
