Rising diesel prices threaten public transport, say bus companies

by

The increase in the price of diesel oil threatens public transport in the country, said this Thursday (10) the NTU (National Association of Public Transport Companies).

The assessment by the entity, which represents urban bus operators, comes after Petrobras announced a 24.9% readjustment in the liter of fuel at refineries.

The decision of the state-owned company, valid from this Friday (11), reflects the increase in oil prices with the war between Russia and Ukraine.

According to NTU, the adjustment announced by Petrobras will have an average impact of 7.5% on the cost of urban bus companies.

“Diesel readjustment threatens public transport and reveals the government’s ineffectiveness in solving the problem”, points out the association, which is critical of Petrobras’ international parity policy.

According to the entity, increases accumulated by fuel have already raised by 10.6% the costs of public transport by bus this year alone.

“These increases will have to be passed on to fares if they are not compensated by the government, because many urban bus companies across the country will be unable to continue their operations, which will directly affect the lives of 43 million passengers who depend on this service all every day”, says NTU.

The entity demands from the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government “definitive solutions for the stabilization of fuel prices”. The association defends the “reformulation of the tax structure on diesel” and the “adoption of special pricing policies for essential sectors, such as public transport”.

This Thursday’s readjustment was announced in the midst of a debate in the government and in Congress on Petrobras’ fuel policy, which provides for the monitoring of international oil prices.

With the 24.9% increase, the price of diesel will rise by almost R$1 per liter at refineries. It will go from R$3.61 to R$4.51.

Petrobras also announced on Thursday increases in gasoline and cooking gas, known as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

The average selling price of gasoline will go from R$3.25 to R$3.86 per liter. The increase is 18.8%. Gas will rise from R$3.86 to R$4.48 per kilo. The readjustment is 16.1%.
