Snakes and horned lizards hidden in their pants: it was the brazen method of an exotic smuggler who tried to bring these reptiles into the United States.
When the 30-year-old American arrived at the border with Mexico near San Diego in late February, customs discovered a total of 52 live reptiles on him.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
The smuggler had locked the reptiles – nine snakes and 43 horned lizards – in plastic bags and hid them “under his cardigan, in the pockets of his pants and at the height of the crotch,” the US customs authorities explained.
“The smugglers are ready to try any method to import their products – in this case they were live reptiles,” said Sydney Akl, a San Diego customs official.
Animals, some of which belong to endangered species, are monitored by veterinarians. The 30-year-old smuggler was arrested.
