Food, alcoholic beverages and tobacco prices fell in Greece in December, according to the latest Eurostat data – The details
Prices for food, alcoholic beverages and tobacco fell in Greece in December, according to the latest Eurostat data, in another sign that the pressure on family budgets in the past period is steadily easing and in some cases reversing.
The relevant individual index shows that in the last month of last year the prices of food, alcoholic beverages and tobacco in our country fell by 0.2% compared to the corresponding month of 2023, while it was preceded by an almost continuous slowing trend on thirteen months.
Greece’s performance on the index is the best among member states that have submitted data for December and far better than the preliminary eurozone average of 2.7%.
The last time Greece had negative inflation in the food, alcohol and tobacco composite index was in the winter and spring of 2021, when health restrictions due to the pandemic caused consumption to fall sharply.
The broader consumer price index was measured at 2.9% for Greece in December, down slightly from the 3% recorded in November. In the eurozone, on the contrary, it moved upwards, “climbing” from 2.2% to 2.4% in the same period.
Eurostat’s detailed measure of December inflation, including the rest of the indicators for all goods and services, will be published on 17 January.
