In the morning hours yesterday, officials of the Directorate of Prosecution of Drugs & Smuggling of the Headquarters of the L.S.-EL.AKT. (DI.DI.NA.L.) and the Security Office of K.L. Piraeus, in cooperation with Customs Officers of the 3rd Customs House of Piraeus, identified and seized nine million three hundred and ninety thousand (9,390,000) contraband cigarettes, inside a container at the Container Station (S.E.M.O.) of the port of Piraeus.

In particular, following an investigation of information by DI.DI.NA.L., a container was seized, which was unloaded at S.EMBOS., coming from Thailand with a final destination of Bratislava, Slovakia. After unsealing and checking, it was found that the container contained hidden cargo (trolley suitcases), behind which were placed 939 boxes with four hundred sixty nine thousand five hundred (469,500) packs of twenty cigarettes each.

A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Central Port Authority of Piraeus, while the confiscated items (tobacco products and the container as a means of transporting contraband) were handed over to the 3rd Customs House of Piraeus.

The corresponding duties and taxes representing a loss of revenue for the State reach two million euros (2,000,000 euros).
