Amendment for the new two-zone system of reduced electricity pricing – Timetables per zone and season will be valid on all days of the week
Amendment for the new two-zone reduced pricing system electricitywhich comes into force from 1.2.2025, was submitted today, Thursday 23 January 2025, by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Theodore Skylakakisin a draft law of the Ministry of Justice.
The purpose of this legislative initiative is to define a two-zone system of reduced electricity pricing, for consumers to access electricity at times when it is cheaper, mainly due to high production from Renewable Energy Sources (RES).
Based on the amendment, it is allowed to define time periods within the same day, during which suppliers can offer a reduced tariff to electricity consumers.
By decision of the Minister of Environment and Energy, the above periods are determined, the actions required by the Operator of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network (DEDDIE), the individual rights and obligations of suppliers and consumers, the duration of validity of the specified time periods, as well and any other matter related to the implementation of the reduced tariff and the transition from the current system to the new one.
In addition, the amendment stipulates that existing supply contracts that provide for reduced pricing hours remain in force, automatically incorporating the new hours, if this is possible based on the technical specifications of the installed meters.
In any case, the consumer is entitled, within three months from the entry into force of the above Ministerial Decision, to terminate the supply contract free of charge.
As already announced by Mr. Skylakakis, the new two-zone system of reduced electricity pricing, in the first phase, concerns consumers who have a suitable meter and an active two-zone (night) tariff (a meter with the possibility of recording in two zones or a new smart meter).
In the new system there will be a meridian zone and a night zone and their hours will differ in winter from summer. In particular, the timetables per zone and season, which will be valid on all days of the week, are as follows:
- Winter opening hours, from November to March:
- Meridian zone: 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
- Night zone: 2 am – 5 a.m.
- Summer opening hours, from April to October:
- Meridian Zone: 11 am – 3 p.m.
- Night zone: 2 am – 4 a.m.
It is noted that in the same draft law, the Minister of Environment and Energy, filed another amendment, which concerns the orderly operation of the Public Gas Trading Corporation (DEPA Emporias S.A.).
