In the submission of a request for the inclusion of the new Greece -Italy (GR.ITA II) electricity interconnection in the 2nd EU EU List of Mutual and Common Interest Projects (PCI/PMI) the ADME and Italy’s Transmission System Operator (Terna), as part of the presentation of PCI/PMI prospective projects to be held in Brussels on March 20, 2025.

As announced, the energy project promoted by the two managers is of strategic importance at regional level and has already been included in the most recent 10-year ENTSO-E networks development plan. The integration of the PCI/PMI interconnection is particularly important as it will ensure the necessary licensing acceleration and the necessary Community funding resources in order to be implemented.

OR Greece-Italy Interconnection It concerns the development of a new submarine (Thesprotia – Galatina), which will triple the margin of electricity exchanges from 500 MW today to 1,500 MW.

The project is expected to ensure the long -term convergence of electricity prices between Greece and Italy to boost the energy security of the two countries and contribute to the further unification of the European electricity market.

The submarine of the project is calculated in 240 km. while the Underground sections in Greece and Italy at 55 km. The new electric interface will be a 1,000 MW capacity (HVDC) and Voltage Source Converters, which is also used in the innovative project of the Crete-Attica electric interconnection recently completed by ADMIE.

Project budget for both countries is estimated to 1.85 billion euros and By finalizing ofexpected to be included in the preliminary ten-year 2026-2035 development program of ADME. It is noted that the two managers are in the final stage of discussions to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to further mature the project.
