“I’ve always loved yellow taxis,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi wrote on social media on Thursday.
The executive refers to the traditional vehicles that circulate in New York with which the ride-sharing application has competed with passengers and has entered into conflicts in recent years for market dominance.
But from now on, an alliance is born. Uber has agreed to list all the city’s taxis on its platform.
The partnership is with taxi software companies CMT (Creative Mobile Technologies) and Curb.
New drivers will receive an upfront fee from the app and will also see the price of the ride up front, just like current Uber drivers. The value for passengers will be similar.
Uber’s vice president of mobility and operations, Andrew Macdonald, says the company’s goal is to bring all taxis together on its platform by 2025. According to him, taxis are already the company’s main product in places like Hong Kong and Turkey.
For Uber, the move is interesting because it can contribute to the supply of labor at a time of shortage of drivers, which prolongs the waiting time of users for a vehicle.
