The European Union plans to impose a single fee of 2 euros on billions of small parcels entering the block, mainly from China, causing a new blow to online retailers such as Temu and Shein.

Trade Commissioner Maros Sefkovic told the European Parliament that he had proposed on Tuesday to get a management fee to tackle the problem with the 4.6 billion small parcels that reach consumer homes every year.

According to the European Commission’s draft proposal, which is available by the Financial Times, the end of € 2 will apply to direct sales, while the items sent to warehouses will be taxed at € 0.50.

Part of the revenue will cover the cost of additional customs controls, while the remainder will be directed to the EU budget.

Sefkovic has pledged to face the huge increase in parcel missions, which – as he said – has brought more dangerous or unpaid products on the market and has caused complaints from European shopkeepers, who are talking about unfair competition.

It is noted that recently the US has also abolished the “de minimis” policy for Chinese goods on the basis of which small parcels entered the US in the context of the duties imposed on Beijing, resulting in these products being automatically exposed to the high duties imposed by the high duties imposed on the increased duties.

This resulted in some retailers leaving the US market.

Subsequently, with a White House executive decree, the US reduced the “de minimis” duty on shipments from China to 54% from 120%, with a fixed $ 100 charge remaining in force since May 14.

These are small -value packages under $ 800.
