On the occasion of World Environment Daythe Governor of the Bank of Greece Giannis Stournaras made the following statement:

“The climate crisis is evolving, while extreme weather is increasing in frequency and intensity. As a central bank, we are watching the ways in which climate crisis affects the economy. In addition to the transition to a low -emission economy, we need to focus on adapting to climate change and protecting the natural environment in order to make our economy more resistant to the consequences of extreme weather and the broader effects of climate change. ”

More to finance adaptation to climate change

Although the importance of adapting climate change is increasingly recognized internationally, its funding levels remain significantly lower than resources directed to mitigating climate change. In addition, so far, funding for adaptation is mainly based on public resources, which emphasizes the need for mobilization and private funds.

Specifically for funding the adaptation, in the context of the Life -ip Adaptingr project, the Bank of Greece It participates in a series of actions with the aim of highlighting the importance of funding, the decisive role of the financial system and the importance of synergies between the parties concerned. In addition, for more than 15 years, the Bank of Greece has a significant contribution to the issues related to climate and sustainability, always acting within the boundaries of its mandate, in the context of the actions of the European Central Bank and the Eurosystem, while for the period 2025-2026 it has assumed the presidency of the Eurosystem.
