Travel balance
According to provisional data, the travel balance in April 2025 showed a surplus of € 778.6 million, compared to a surplus of EUR 666.0 million in 2024. In addition, increased in travel payments (April 2025: 305.8 million euros, April 2024: 257 million).
The increase in travel receipts is due both to the rise of incoming travel traffic by 6.4% and average expenditure per journey of 10.6%. Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset by 27.0% of the goods balance deficit and contributed 77.8% to all net receipts from services.
During January – April 2025, the travel balance posted a surplus of EUR 1,177.0 million, compared to a surplus of EUR 1,137.2 million in the corresponding period of 2024. An increase of EUR 206.4 million or EUR 10.6%, the travel receipts, which stood at EUR 166.1 million, which increased by EUR 166.6. During January – April 2025, travel receipts rose 10.6% compared to the corresponding period of 2024 and stood at € 2,157.1 million. This development is mainly due to the increase in receipts by residents of other countries by 26.0%, which stood at EUR 1,040.3 million, as revenue from EU-27 residents decreased by 1.8% and stood at EUR 1,025.6 million. More specifically, receipts from residents of the euro area countries stood at € 861.5 million, down 5.7%, while revenue from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro zone increased by 25.4% to EUR 164.1 million.
In particular, receipts from Germany increased by 0.8% and stood at € 297.1 million, while receipts from France decreased by 25.0% and stood at € 110.2 million. Italy was also reduced by 6.6%, which stood at € 110.3 million. Of the other countries, the UK revenue rose 23.4%, which stood at € 167.8 million, and the US revenue increased by 36.8% and stood at EUR 325.5 million. Finally, receipts from Russia rose to € 2.5 million.
Incoming travel traffic
Inbound travel traffic in April 2025 stood at 1,663.2 thousand travelers, up 6.4% compared to the corresponding month of 2024. In particular, airport travel increased by 6.8% compared to April 2024, while by road stations increased by 6.1%. The increase in incoming travel movement came from 34.9%from the rise in travel traffic, as travel traffic from EU-27 countries decreased by 11.1%. More specifically, travel traffic from euro area countries stood at 706.5 thousand travelers, reduced by 8.2%, while traveling by EU-27 countries outside the euro zone, which stood at 155.5 mm travelers.

With regard to countries outside the EU-27, travel from the United Kingdom increased by 41.1% and stood at 127.1 thousand travelers, while the US increased by 43.5% to 150.8 thousand travelers. In January – April 2025, incoming travel traffic increased by 5.8%and stood at 4,122.2 thousand travelers, compared to 3,896.0 thousand travelers in the corresponding period of 2024. In particular, travel traffic via airports increased by 10.8%, while by road stations. During the review, travel traffic from EU-27 countries stood at 2,041.1 thousand travelers, down 5.4% compared to the corresponding period of 2024, while travel traffic from other countries increased by 19.7% and stood at 2,081.2 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from euro area countries increased by 3.2%, while travel traffic from EU-27 countries outside the euro area decreased by 27.9%.
In particular, travel from Germany increased by 3.6% and stood at 475.5 thousand travelers, while France decreased by 22.6% and stood at 164.6 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from Italy, which was 198.3 thousand travelers, also declined by 11.0%. In terms of countries outside the EU – 27, travel from the United Kingdom increased by 41.5% and stood at 294.6 thousand travelers, while the US increased by 26.9% to 339.5 thousand travelers. Finally, travel from Russia increased to 2.8 thousand travelers.
