The young man who hacked Tesla
A 19-year-old cybersecurity expert managed to take control of at least 25 Tesla cars in 13 countries from his bedroom. Now, he tells the details of the episode.
How he did: David Colombo, owner of a cybersecurity company, was providing services at the beginning of the year for a contractor and needed to study a certain software. That’s when he discovered the flaw that gave him access to the vehicles.
He could figure out the vehicle’s location, flash lights, open and close windows, but said he didn’t do anything without the owners’ permission. He notified the company of the failure, who responded and fixed the problem.
Not this one: the hacker was unable to access Tesla’s Autopilot system, criticized for failing to prevent drivers from taking their attention off the controller while the car is in motion.
The model, which accelerates, brakes and drives the car alone, is being investigated on suspicion of having caused fatal accidents.
on the glue: Colombo wasn’t the only 19-year-old who’s given Elon Musk a headache in recent months. Student Jack Sweeney in January created a Twitter account that tracks the businessman’s private jet.
The Tesla founder even offered Sweeney $5,000 to delete the account, but he declined. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the student decided to create another profilewhich monitors the air travel of oligarchs linked to Vladimir Putin.
IPI cut goes to 33%
The Jair Bolsonaro government (PL) is due to issue this Thursday (31) a decree that expands the cut in the IPI (Tax on Industrialized Products) to 33%but which should leave out of the reduction the goods produced in the Manaus Free Trade Zone.
Understand: last month, the government had cut 25% on IPI for all sectors other than tobacco products. The Amazon caucus in Congress squeaked, saying the measure would harm the Free Zone, where goods are exempt from IPI.
To approve the reductions in taxes on fuels in Congress, the government then made an agreement with the bench, which will be fulfilled with the decree of this Thursday.
why it matters: Among the products made in the Free Zone are white goods –refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, etc.–, motorcycles and soft drinks concentrates.
This means that the cut in the IPI should not have much effect on consumers, since the exemption will reach inputs and parts used in industrial production.
In numbers: at the time of the 25% reduction for all products other than cigarettes, the drop in revenue was estimated at BRL 21.1 billiondivided between the Union and states and municipalities.
The Ministry of Economy has not yet confirmed the new calculations with this greater reduction, but which affects fewer products.
How the war harms Brazilian industry
The economic effects of the war in Ukraine are already reaching Brazilian micro and small industries, at a time when they were still adapting to the new reality caused by the pandemic.
What explains: soaring oil prices due to the conflict increased transport costs and raw material derivatives, such as resins, which make plastic parts more expensive. Since 2020, plastics have had a high average 60%.
The price of pig iron, an alloy widely used by the industry, rose 25% in February.
In numbers: three quarters of micro and small industries in São Paulo registered high prices for raw materials and inputs in February this year, according to a Datafolha survey for the sector’s union.
In the same survey, 41% were unable to buy what they needed due to lack of product at a supplier, and 39% received inputs and raw materials late.
Problems here too: the cycle of high interest rates, which makes credit more expensive, as well as the retraction in demand caused by the drop in the population’s income and the slowdown in economic activity, should also hinder the growth of industries this year.
Sector in red: industrial production as a whole declined 2.4% in January, the month before Russia invaded Ukraine. The result was the worst for the month since 2018, according to the IBGE.
Long-term unemployment is a record
Almost a third (30%) of Brazilians looking for work in the last quarter of last year had been unemployed for at least two years.
In numbers: from October to December 2021, the latest with available data, 3.6 million of a universe of 12 million unemployed were looking for a job for at least 24 months.
The survey was carried out by the consultancy IDados, at the request of sheetbased on the IBGE’s Pnad ContÃnua.
What explains: the pandemic threw many people into unemployment, and those who were already in this situation before the health crisis had even more difficulty finding a vacancy. Returning to the market is usually more difficult for those who have been out of it for longer.
Most affected: long-term unemployment also reflects the inequalities present in other national indicators.
- the women were 62.6% (almost 2.3 million) of the total number of Brazilians who had been looking for a job for at least two years. Men (almost 1.4 million) corresponded to the remaining 37.4%.
 - Still in terms of long-term unemployment, blacks were 63.9% (2.3 million). The whites represented 35.4%.
