Skrekas: Europe will not succumb to Putin’s blackmail

by

Putin’s demand for gas payments in rubles is a political blackmail that has no economic meaning, Energy Minister Costas Skrekas told SKAI

He explained that Gazprom could be paid in euros and then converted into rubles, which would have the same financial effect.

Mr Skrekas said no one knew what Putin had in mind, but made it clear that Europe would not succumb to his blackmail.

Referring to Greece, he said that the next payment that DEPA Commerce must make to Gazprom is on April 20 and the government has already planned the steps that must be taken to maintain normal market order.

Mr. Skrekas noted that the Crisis Management Team of the Ministry of Environment met on Wednesday, examining all the alternative scenarios for ensuring the smooth energy supply of our country.

As he mentioned, he has asked until today, Friday, DESFA to submit a cost-benefit evaluation study to the Ministry of Environment and Energy for the addition of a floating LNG tank at the Revythousa terminal and by Tuesday to inform the Administrator about the possibilities of maintaining gas reserves

The minister explained that if there is availability and we can import liquefied natural gas and the four dual fuel units that the country has can be turned into oil, there is no time limit for the supply of our country.

Assured that home consumers are fully protected and will be the last to be affected

Mr. Skrekas underlined that the problem with the increases in the prices of electricity is very big. He explained that the government gives subsidies and subsidies related to energy to alleviate the costs, however Greece can not face a global problem alone, Europe must face it as a whole.
