Panel SA: Airline Association calls for review of Petrobras’ pricing policy

by

Abear, an association that brings together major airlines in Brazil, reinforced its speech in favor of revising Petrobras’ international price parity policy after the new increase in the price of QAV (aviation kerosene), on Friday (1st), which exceeded 18% in Guarulhos and other airports.

Eduardo Sanovicz, president of Abear, says that the highs this year, added to the 92% increase in the average price of jet fuel last year compared to 2020, more than double the cost of the input in the period and will compromise the moment of recovery of the sector.

“This country needs to face a debate on the policy of international parity. This has to be done in a rational and technical way. I am aware that there are economic, political and legal impacts on this issue, but it is urgent. consumers and society make this debate unavoidable”, says Sanovicz.

He argues that decades ago, when Brazil bought more than half of its QAV abroad, international parity was understandable.

“But today, 90% of the aviation kerosene consumed in Brazil is produced here. Now, we buy kerosene that, between production and consumption, has traveled 100 kilometers or less. Brazilian consumers pay as if the QAV had traveled thousands of kilometers from the Gulf of Mexico”, he says.

The increase in the price of aircraft fuel has been treated in the airline industry as a very worrying headache because it has the potential to raise the value of tickets to a level capable of inhibiting consumption and causing a cut in the offer of flights.

“It is necessary to face this debate because these costs that are not subject to any aspect of governance in Brazil, which are linked to exchange rates, oil, war, fall on the productive sectors and on consumers”, says Sanovicz.

The speech of the president of Abear is added to other initiatives of the entities of the air sector around the subject of the price of the fuel. Last month, several sector entities went to Cade to ask that the case of the increase in the QAV be included in the scope of the administrative investigation that investigates possible abuses by the state-owned company in the fuel market.
