The completion of most of this year’s tourist season comes with a dramatic increase in tourist revenue. Greece, despite pressure from the international market, maintains consistently high performance, once again confirming its dynamics as a top destination in the Mediterranean and beyond. Already, the first data from the Bank of Greece shows that revenue from tourism in our country during the seven months of January -July increased by 12.5%, reaching 12.1 billion euros, while arrivals of foreign visitors rose 2.6%. This development has substantially contributed to the improvement of the travel service balance, boosting the country’s revenue from tourism.
At the same time, hoteliers are talking about the year without unpleasant surprises, with a horizon that remains promising for September.
According to the Secretary General of the Pan -Hellenic Federation of Hoteliers, Angelos Kallia, the tourist traffic seems to be at the same level as last year. As he pointed out, the season rolled satisfactorily, with several areas recording a positive course.
The messages for September are also optimistic. “It seems to be a year without surprises, at least for hoteliers, as we have from the data we have, the catering sector faces difficulties: the purchasing power of visitors is diminished,” he said, speaking to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency and adding: Europeans, and there is a wait for US duties as well. “
The Peloponnese, like several new destinations, gradually gain ground. “Many Greeks have begun to discover new destinations that are mildly developing,” he noted. The country’s great coastline offers a wealth of holiday opportunities, while the strong interest of foreign tourists, according to him, supports both the economy and the viability of tourism.
Also noteworthy is the increase this year’s hotels showed in mountain destinations compared to last year. “This shows that the mountainous areas are gradually becoming a choice for summer vacations,” he said.
However, despite the positive image, hoteliers are still concerned about the viability of the tourism product, pointing out the need to improve infrastructure.
September, High Season of Epirus
Although September is now a popular month for the islands, for destinations such as Epirus remains even more “strong”. The tourist traffic culminates not only in September but also in October. According to the president of the Ioannina Hoteliers Association, Spyros Sourelis, the hotels in the area are filled, while the city of Ioannina “works in the full” due to many events, conferences, sports events and cultural activities.
Nevertheless, the year is expected to close at the same level as revenue last year, although the fullness has reported a middle -class decline.
How many traveled
At Fraport Greece’s 14 regional airports, August set a historic record: a total of 6.8 million passengers, a 4% increase compared to last year. For the first time this number was exceeded in a month, while Rhodes Airport became the first to cross the 1.3 million passenger barrier.
The impressive rise from Israel (+53.9%) but also the strong airport march such as Thessaloniki (+9%), Corfu (+5.3%) and Chania (+6.7%) reinforced the positive image of the season. The main markets that fueled the increase were Germany, Poland, Israel and the United Arab Emirates. On the contrary, Santorini fell (-9.4%), due to Volotea routes and bending the UK market.
The average flight fullness improved to 88%, confirming the dynamics of demand for Greece, while the domestic movement remained stable (916 thousand passengers). Overall, since the commencement of the concession, Fraport airports have welcomed almost 239 million passengers.
Upward trend for Athens International Airport
The Athens International Airport is also rising. According to preliminary estimates, in August 2025, passenger traffic amounted to 3.88 million passengers, an increase of 6.7%compared to August 2024. Both domestics (+2.5%) and international traffic (+8.4%) exceeded last year.
Overall, between January -August 2025, the airport traded 22.71 million passengers, up 6.8%. The rise was more intense in international arrivals and departures (+8.8%) compared to domestic movement (+2.1%).
An increase in arrivals for the months of January-August-in relation to the corresponding period of 2024-is also recorded by the “five” of the strongest markets abroad: USA (8%), United Kingdom (10%), Germany (5%), France (8%) and Italy (30%).
Increase in flights: In the first eight months of 2025, they rose to 191,165, up 5.9%compared to the same period in 2024. domestic flights increased by 1.3%, while internationals moved to a clearly higher levels (+9.1%).
This year’s season proves that Greek tourism not only maintains its power, but also expands its horizons, embracing new destinations and different forms of travel experience. With September evolving in one of the most attractive months for vacation and Greece remaining steadily in the first choices internationally, prospects for the future are very positive, as the Greek summer does not end in August.
