The US government threatened Friday that it would impose sanctions on any country voting in favor of imposing ending carbon dioxide emissions on maritime transport under the International Maritime Organization (IMO), part of the UN system.

“We will strive hard to protect our financial interests by imposing costs on the countries supporting NZF,” the framework of which this fee is planned to implement, US Foreign Ministers Marco Rubio, Energy, said in a joint statement.

Next week, members of the London-based IAS, are expected to vote on the adoption of an agreement baptized Net-Zero Framework (NZF, framework of climate neutrality in free performance), with the aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the sector of transport.

“This will be the first time the United Nations Organization will impose a global tax on carbon (dioxide) on international scale,” according to Donald Trump’s government ministers.

The announcement stresses that Washington “categorically rejects” the proposal to the IMO and “will not tolerate any measures that will increase the costs for our citizens, our energy providers, our shipping companies and their customers, or even tourists.”

For the US government, the economic consequences of the measure “could be devastating”, as “some estimates” that citing – without referring anywhere – worldwide costs for maritime transport can “increase 10% or more”.

After returning to power, US President Donald Trump has begun to recall US climate commitments. He withdrew his country from the 2015 Paris Agreement, which was intended to limit the increase in planet’s temperature to 1.5 ° C in relation to the pre -industrial era. It also does not stop expressing its support for fossil fuels and promoting deregulation.

The Republican president rejected the UN step the scientific conclusions on the issue, reaching the point of characterizing climate change the “biggest fraud” of history.

Among the penalties examined are the restrictions on visas visas and the imposition of additional fees or taxes on ships that will support the measure.
