Panel SA: New economist close to Lula questioned market euphoria with Bolsonaro in 2018

by

Economist Gabriel Galípolo, who appears this week as one of the new names around Lula for the 2022 election, already in 2018, pondered the euphoria of the market in relation to Bolsonaro.

In an interview with sheet days before the second round between Bolsonaro and Fernando Haddad, Galípolo said that he saw a romantic projection in relation to the then candidate, who was leading the polls.

“Will it be a honeymoon or just a wedding night? This is the time that we need to see. Brazil has a different situation from other emerging countries: it no longer has foreign debt, huge volume of reserves, large idle capacity”, said the economist, at the time president of the Fator bank.

In another analogy, he used a circus metaphor when qualifying the skepticism that the financial market should consider to get its projections right.

“I like the circus trapeze artist metaphor. You can go to the circus and think the trapeze artist flies. But if he himself thinks he flies, it can be dangerous. What I’m pondering is how much the market is starting to believe that the trapeze artist flies. At first, it seemed that it was a rhetoric that sponsored a candidate that the market understood as more palatable than another candidate. Today, I don’t think that anymore. It seems to me that there is a conviction [por parte do mercado] of those who really bought that narrative that the problems will end up simply fighting corruption”, said Galípolo on the eve of Bolsonaro’s victory.
