Commodity Shuttle: Agribusiness exports yield US$ 131 billion in 12 months

by

Agribusiness exports reached a record US$ 131 billion (R$ 621.2 billion) in the last 12 months, a financial value 28% higher than in the same previous period, according to data from Folha, based on information from Secex (Secretariat of Foreign Trade).

High prices of products in the foreign market ensured such a high amount. In view of this new level of commodity prices, inflation spreads across all countries.

The main Brazilian market, by far, remains China. They left US$ 45 billion (R$ 213.4 billion) in the country in the last 12 months. The United States followed, with US$ 9.5 billion (R$ 45.1 billion).

Asia is one of the regions most interested in Brazilian products. Of the top ten countries on the list of Brazil’s main importers, five are from the region, all with imports exceeding US$ 2.5 billion (R$ 11.9 billion) in the period.

Among the most exported products, the leadership continues with soybeans, which reached US$ 45 billion (R$ 213.4 billion). Proteins added up to US$ 19.6 billion (R$ 92.9 billion) in revenues in the period.

This is despite China having been out of the Brazilian market for three months in the purchase of beef and having reduced the volume of pork purchased.

Sugar, with a smaller supply on the world market, and the consequent acceleration in prices, was also a highlight. Revenues from the product totaled US$ 9.3 billion (R$ 44.1 billion) from April last year to March this year.

Cereal exports did not reach the level of previous years, due to corn, which had a retraction in revenues, caused by drought and frost that affected last year’s off-season. Revenues were US$ 5.62 billion (R$ 26.7 billion), with a drop of 16%.

In part, the absence of corn was offset by wheat, especially this year. In the first three months, cereal exports totaled 2.2 million tons, with a yield of US$ 663 million (R$ 3.14 billion).

Despite the country being a traditional wheat importer, this year’s exports exceeded imports. The volume exported this year was 289% higher than from January to March 2021.

The wood sector, mainly raw wood, maintained an upward trend. In the last 12 months, exports generated US$ 4.9 billion (R$ 23.2 billion), 47% more than in the same previous period.

Meat On Brazil’s leadership in beef exports to the United States. Antônio Camardelli, from Abiec (Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries), says it is a good sign.

partners US industries have recognized that Brazil is not a competitor, but a partner to complement their domestic demand for meat. Europe, on the other hand, still considers the Brazilian industry as a competitor, he says.

Leader Data from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) from Wednesday (6) indicated that Brazil surpassed Canada, Australia and Mexico in beef exports in the first two months of this year to the North American market.

Wheat The area sown in the 2022/23 harvest totals 3.4 million hectares, which represents an increase of 21% compared to the previous one. Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul lead this growth.

wheat 2 The estimates are from consultancy StoneX, which predicts a record production of 10 million tons of wheat in the period. Prices encourage planting, according to the company.
