Panel SA: Unions plan demonstrations against wage loss in inflation

by

The rise in inflation will make this year’s salary negotiations more nervous, and the current scenario of the pandemic can help organize the return of street demonstrations to press for the replacement of salary losses, according to union leaders. João Carlos Gonçalves, aka Juruna, secretary general of Força Sindical, affirms that the subject will be the main item of the mobilizations of the 1st of May.

“During this period, the unions will make salary negotiations, but we are also going to call street demonstrations to charge the cost of living. Today, we have health conditions that allow demonstrations”, says Juruna.

According to him, union pressures will also press for changes in economic policy to reduce the inflationary burden on the population.

Ricardo Patah, president of UGT, says that he has been trying to bring forward collective negotiations this year because the scenario is more delicate. “There are many ingredients, with a pandemic still, economic crisis, unemployment, discouragement, war in Ukraine, elections, polarization. This means that we are going to have crazy disputes, hatred. In order not to contaminate the upcoming collective negotiations, we are anticipating them all”, says Patah.
