“Almyros” will be the spear this Easter for Greek households, as its price on Holy Week is expected to reach – if not exceed – 15 euros per kilo in neighborhood butchers.
As reported in skai.gr, the president of the Hellenic Livestock Association (SEK), Christos Tsombanos, this year the price of lambs has increased significantly. Specifically, the price of lamb is estimated to move next week to 14 euros per kilo and goat to 15 euros per kilo. «We must try to match the prices. How will retirees of 300 euros and employees of 500 euros buy lamb for Easter?“, points out.
The increased cost of feed, as expected, has dragged down the prices of producers, who, according to Mr. Tsombanos, sell about 1 euro more expensive than last year. «Last year we sold 6.5-7.5 euros per kilo and this year 7.5-8.5 euros. Taking into account the cost of the slaughterhouses (1.5 euros), the lamb leaves us around 10 euros and ends up being sold in retail for 14-15 euros“, He emphasizes.
However, despite the increased price of the spear, the president of SEC says that the demand has skyrocketed, even a month before Easter, as consumers try to secure a better price. «Despite the fact that the Greeks are always at the last minute, for a month now they have been buying lambs and putting them in their freezer».
Indicatively, butcher shop in Thessaloniki which last year during such a period had sold 50-60 lambs, this year in a period of two weeks – three weeks before Easter – has sold 400 lambs.
He clarifies that despite the fact that this year the Catholic Easter falls a week before ours, and specifically next Sunday, there is no question of shortages in the market. Although Greece exports significant quantities to Italy and Spain, their availability offset by imports that our country does, mainly from Romania.
The butchers are asking for a ceiling
At the same time, the Panhellenic Federation of Butchers in a letter to the government asking for a price cap marketing and retail for the meat that will be traded on Easter days. «Rising prices have made the market dysfunctional and the economy problematic with unwanted extensions. In this context, the Butcher industry is facing once again. For this reason we ask for a limit to be set at the maximum price in order to ensure the interest of the consumer and to avoid the degradation and economic stagnation not only of our industry but also of the meat sector in general. The Federation points out in its letter.
