Twitter users react with concern and memes to Musk’s offer

by

After billionaire Elon Musk announced, this Thursday (14), a proposal to buy Twitter for about US$ 43 billion (R$ 201 billion), netizens reacted on the platform. At around 12:30 pm (Brasilia time), the term “Elon Musk” became the most talked about topics on the social network in Brazil and the United States.

The reactions are mainly divided between comments about Musk’s intentions with the proposal, questions about freedom of expression on the network and, of course, memes.

“If Elon Musk buys Twitter, I’ll just stay on TikTok,” said digital content creator Leila Germano.

Writer Henry Bugalho, in turn, questioned whether Elon Musk will preserve the free dissemination of ideas on the platform:

Many names linked to the right on the platform, in turn, positioned themselves in favor of the purchase. Influencer Leandro Ruschel, for example, believes that Musk will be “brutally attacked” if he manages to close the deal.

Another profile celebrated the proposal, which would serve to “fire leftists”.

In the US, one netizen jokingly comments: “‘I’ll leave Twitter if Elon Musk takes over’ is the new ‘I’ll move to Canada if Trump wins'” (in free translation).

Other users also reacted with humor:

On April 4, the relationship between Elon Musk and Twitter had already generated movement on the internet by the announcement that the billionaire had purchased, on March 14, a stake of more than 9% in the company. With the purchase, Tesla’s owner had become one of the company’s biggest shareholders.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal even announced the Tesla owner as a board member, but Musk later said he rejected the offer.
