Gasoline price rises for third week and hits new record

by

The price of gasoline at Brazilian stations rose for the third week in a row and reached a new record since the ANP (Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis) began to publish its weekly price survey in 2004.

According to the agency, the average price of fuel was R$ 7,270 per liter last week, up 0.7% over the previous week. The value is higher than the peak of R$ 7,267 verified two weeks after the mega-increase in refineries promoted by Petrobras in March.

The rise follows the rise in the price of anhydrous ethanol, which represents 27% of the mixture sold at gas stations. In April alone, the price of biofuel at the plants in São Paulo rose 12%, according to Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics), from Esalq/USP.

Hydrous ethanol follows the same path: last week, the average price of fuel at Brazilian gas stations reached R$5.496 per liter, up 4.8% over the previous week. In the plants, the product also accumulates high of 12% in a month.

The rise in ethanol prices is caused by increased demand in an off-season period. The mill owners projected a retreat with the beginning of the harvest this month, but there was still no change in the trend.

The ANP survey detected stability in diesel and cooking gas prices. The first was sold last week for R$ 6.60 per liter and the second, for R$ 113.24 per 13-kilogram cylinder. The two products were also readjusted by Petrobras in March.

The readjustment, which accompanied the escalation of international prices after the beginning of the war in Ukraine, led to a troubled change of command at Petrobras, with the dismissal of General Joaquim Silva e Luna and the appointment of José Mauro Coelho to his place.

Upon taking office, however, Coelho defended the policy of aligning fuel prices with international quotations, which is criticized both by the opposition and by the government and its allies in Congress.

Cooking gas, however, had a small reduction in refineries in April, a movement that has not yet reached the final consumer, according to data released this Tuesday (26) by the ANP.

The price of CNG (vehicle natural gas) also remains high, reaching R$ 4.754 per cubic meter, an increase of 0.2% compared to the previous week. ANP research found the fuel being sold for up to R$6,821 in Brasília.
